Is it possible to use three phase NEMA starters on single phase applications?

Can a 3 phase 8536 type S starter be used for single phase loads?

Yes, however you must first verify that the device in question is suitably sized for the load to be controlled. Jumper strap kits may be installed on melting alloy overloads or add spare thermal units to the unused phases. Select thermal units from the ``1 T.U.`` portion of the thermal unit tables for proper motor protection.
NOTE: Starters with pre-series F Motor Logic Overload Relays should not be used on single-phase applications, for series F and later the motor leads will need to be looped so there is current on all three phases.
