10,000 young people at the Base of the Pyramid* trained in the electricity professions

2,950 Young people from the Bop trained in the electricity professions from January 1st, 2010.

The populations at the Base of the Pyramid* live on a purchasing power parity of less than 3000$ per year. Schneider Electric plays an important part in directly or indirectly creating new training courses in schools or training centres:

  • Opening new classes or schools in the field of electricity;
  • Providing disadvantaged populations with access to electricity training (award grants, organise work experience in Schneider Electric entities, etc.);
  • Improving teaching conditions in existing training establishments (donations of electrical equipment, creation of training modules, etc.).

The development players have identified that what acts as a brake upon access to electricity is the lack of local skilled workers for the installation, maintenance and correct operation of the electrical networks. This lack of skills is prejudicing long-term electrification projects, particularly in rural or isolated areas.

Schneider Electric's ambition is to contribute to the development of the local economic base via the electricity professions.
The training courses supported by Schneider Electric are vocational and allow young people to become skilled electricians, panel builders, control engineers and technicians, etc. in the electrical industry.

BipBop is the Schneider Electric’s access to energy programme. The Group has developed BipBop, a sustainable programme to bring safe, clean electricity to people who need it the most worldwide. BipBop programme aims at developing solutions dedicated to needs and wants of poor communities, providing financial support to SMEs and entrepreneurs in the field of energy access and training young disadvantaged people to electricity trades. Three indicators, that are part of the Planet & Society Barometer, monitor BipBop programme progress:

  • Contribute to the electrification of one million households at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP),
  • Train 10,000 young from the BoP in the electricity professions
  • Set up 500 new entrepreneurs from the Bop in the electricity sector.
