Why is it necessary to use larger size drive and a line reactor when applying single phase input to a drive?

NOTE: Not all drives have been tested for single phase input. Some drives are specifically designed for single phase input without a need to derate the drives or add line reactors. The information here is general. Specific information can be found in the installation guide for the specific drive in question. The rectifiers must be rated to carry the increased current due to single phasing the input.
Single phase input greatly increases the voltage ripple on the DC bus capacitors. This causes additional stress on the caps. A 3% line reactor helps reduce this ripple.
