Are there any restrictions when discarding Square D smoke detectors?

Issue:
Product Features

Product Line:
Obsolete Smoke Detectors

Cause:
Regulations regarding disposal

Resolution:
These devices are obsolete and no longer sold nor supported by Square D Company/Schneider Electric. The product line was sold in 1988 to Earli-Gard, Inc. of St. Petersburg, FL, which is now out of business.
On the product  label of a Square D smoke detector it was noted that it contains radio active material and that the product should not be thrown in the trash, but rather returned to Square D. Where should it be sent?
This notice was put on the smoke detectors to guard against the unlikely incident of large quantities of the smoke detectors being scrapped at one time. In an isolated cases of putting one or two units in the trash there is no significant hazard.
