What is a potential transformer?

A potential transformer (PT), or voltage transformer (VT) is an instrument transformer used for measuring voltage. It is specially designed to maintain an accurate voltage phase angle reference between the source and the instrument transformer`s output along w/ excellent voltage regulation to obtain accurate voltage measurements. When used with current transformers (CT), accurate power measurements can be made.
